THE REFECTORY

In the refectory
A celebratory scene

As baby birds are brought to the table
Roasted and obscene………..
Garnished in opulence
And set before the Queen

Then blindfolded courtiers
Anticipating with delight
Feast on the innocents
All through the night

Arrogant and privileged
Ignorant to a head
Blindfolded courtiers
Feasting on the dead

Blindfolded and ignorant
They gorge upon the hapless beasts
Privileged and arrogant
Exclusive in their feast

And

Amid the dining on carrion
As the jesters dance around
The ever gorging monarch
Makes no regal sound

Then…...........

She rises to address them
Almost to decree……
“Tonight I am sated
With all the dead in me”

And the blindfolded courtiers
Bowing before the royal scene
Pick the feathers from their teeth
And hail their sated Queen
