Great Falls park, Virginia side, during a strong snowstorm.
It was quite a challenge to get there that day. The usual road was blocked by a fallen tree and I had to backtrack and circle around a number of miles to find an open road. It took good tires, slow driving and four-wheel drive.
By the time I arrived, the snow was about 12 inches deep and still falling, though lighter. The only other people present when I arrived were the park rangers. A few hardy souls arrived by the time I’d made this image.
Canon 20D, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L…and most importantly… a sturdy tripod.
brrrrrr! That rushing water looks dangerous and mesmerizing all at once….what an amazing scene you’ve captured!
Thank you Leslie. Yes, it is dangerous. Aside from the cold, the rapids do drown people who fall in, a few per year (those who don’t read the warning signs and can’t stay off the rocks).

Wow – it’s really beautiful John! I almost fell in winter rapids once so I know the danger – you be careful!!
Thank Goodness for 4X4 eh? I must say it was well worth it…even through the obstacle…to get an image like this…that is exactly what I would have said!!!
Thank you Kellie. Gotta love the Xterra and BFG All-Terrains.

Thanks Jan. I’m glad you didn’t fall. And no problem, I was standing behind a barrier, I could have slipped on snow but not fallen into the river.
awesome image and contrast between the dark rocks and trees to the whitewater and snow
Thank you Gary.
