Snowstorm at Great Falls, VA
Great Falls park, Virginia side, during a strong snowstorm.
It was quite a challenge to get there that day. The usual road was blocked by a fallen tree and I had to backtrack and circle around a number of miles to find an open road. It took good tires, slow driving and four-wheel drive.
By the time I arrived, the snow was about 12 inches deep and still falling, though lighter. The only other people present when I arrived were the park rangers. A few hardy souls arrived by the time I’d made this image.

Hi John, this is an incredible image,l was just wondering if that is a frozen waterfall ? great work !and l complain when it gets cold here ! l will complain no longer !!...........Trudi
John Wright
Hi Trudi,
No it wasn’t frozen, not quite that cold! Just snow on the rocks surrounding the falls. And a fast enough shutter to mostly stop the motion of the water. Thanks for your comment.
Antanas
what a terrific capture
John Wright replied
Thanks Antanas.
Krys Bailey

All i could say when i saw this is WOW!!! If it doesn’t win then this needs to be in at least the top 10. I will have to visit there someday! I think I would be afriad to hike with snow like that, but its so worth the shot:)
John Wright replied
Thank you very much Johanna. Most of the way followed a path, even though it was through snow. I had to cross a couple of low rocks, and then I made the images from a platform, so it was fairly safe.
Nikki Mulkern
Another stunning shot, love these type of winter scenes!!!
John Wright replied
Thank you Nikki. This is from the same perspective as the other, just zoomed out a bit.
Dar Hurt
Excellent John!!!! Great shot!!
John Wright replied
Thank you very much Dar, I appreciate it.
MountainHawk
Great image and great persistance! I seem to always find myself bushwacking to mountain tops and waterfalls. Ripped clothes and scatched up arms sometimes but man the things I have been able to experience, some of very few others have. Most people think we are crazy, but we know better don’t we. Like the angle you shot this from. And the long branch that looks like it is trying to reach over the water looks real cool too! Nice job!
John Wright replied
Thank you very much. I am not always so persistent but it often pays off and I’m glad I got this one.
Cora Wandel
Beautiful, John, I’ve been hoping we have a good snowfall this year so I can get out and take some great pictures like this one!
John Wright replied
No luck so far with snow! But winter isn’t over yet, we may yet be in luck.
