Artist's Description

This photograph is of a volunteer in the VFF Fencing Project, having afternoon ‘smoko’ at Strathewen near Mt Sugarloaf.
Graeme is one of about 8000 volunteers, and he is ‘just doing his bit’ to restore about 18000km of fire damaged fence.
This is a cattle farm bordering the Kinglake National Park. It was ravaged by the Black Saturday fire. As soon as this boundary fence is completed, the cattle will return from agistment. They survived by being in the valley. The farmhouse roof is still under tarpaulin. In the foreground is a dead kangaroo.
To me the photograph shows the utter devastation of the fire, the weariness of the volunteer, the mosaic greening recovery of the pasture in warm afternoon sunshine. It implies hope for the future.

The photograph was not posed. I had been fencing also.
I shot it on a Canon EOS 5D, at f8, @ 1/160, on 24/08/2009.
I used an EF24-105 Lens.
