Strawberry

Quiet, overwhelming slumber,
Fill my mind with tender lumber,
Lie my head upon the pillow,
Let me find a little dream.

Now, hear this anticipating,
As the reddened sun is fading,
Behind yonder weeping willow,
Its fingers in the stream.

Less upon my mind, finding,
Down a private road, winding,
Past a lazy mill, still,
Grinding out a little scream.

Cautiously I wander on,
Through a gate, the latches gone,
All the air still, low
Fog upon the street.

Out from the mists, swirling,
A Strawberry bud unfurling,
Dancing a pirouette,
Until, at last, we meet.

Her loving, beckon chance,
Through her gentle gaze enchants,
Ensnares me, her gallow
Lifts me gently off my feet.

I awake, there surrounds me,
Rippled dreams, they confound me,
A message from tomorrow,
Of a future still asleep.

My eyes, darting open,
Seeking out the darkness, hoping,
She slides in here, beside me,
And sighs contently, deep.

Through the window, by the willow,
Dancing in the midnight frill, how
She seems to come and go –
A spectre in the night.

Yet Strawberry scent lingers,
Like her tiny little fingers,
Flecked across my heart,
Soft and warm and light.
