Artist's Description

Circa 1980’s
Gordon House was a hostel for homeless men in Melbourne, Australia. I took these some years ago as part of a photography studies project. It was quite intimidating approaching these men and asking to take these shots.
As it was they couldn’t have been more helpful.
This man was the first I approached. He called to the others and said “come on fellas, this lad’s got a school project to do….and we’re it”.
He told me this was his dignified pose.
All they asked for was a cigarette…. I gave them half a packet and left with their best wishes…
A very humbling experience.
Gordon House has closed but care and support for the aged and homeless people of Melbourne continues through the Wintringham organisation, St Vincent de Paul and Hanover, among others.
By pure chance I recently had a conversation with the guy who was the manager of Gordon House at the time I took these shots. He recognised this man and recalled having many lively debates (philosophical and political) with him over breakfasts at the hostel.
