Below freezing cold above ground, the black beach vents sulfurous steam and cooks the bird. The volcanic activity here caused these waters to boil in 1923. In 1930 the harbour floor dropped 3m during an earthquake.
A British geology report on this area in 2003 offers a helpful suggestion for anyone caught during volcanic eruptions:
“If ships are present…when an eruption occurs, they should depart…immediately, ideally after uplifting all people ashore.”
