A Black Browed Albatross chick tests it’s wings in it’s mud nest, getting ready to try flying. A younger chick looks on.
West Point Island, originally known as Albatross Island, was a popular site for slaughtering seals and penguins for oil at the turn of the 19th century. Literal overkill helped to end this industry in the area.
Today many Albatross and Rockhopper Penguins still inhabit the island.

A uniquely human trait, to slaughter until there is nothing left. I’m glad some of the penguins have returned. Great shot.

  • yeah we’re a funny species for sure.

a favorite bird of mine (i disslike birds…with the exception of owls, albatross, vultures and doves…so far anyways lol)

  • yeah not usually a big fan of birds either for some reason – albatross, kookaburra and penguins are my exceptions.

Thank you John. Brought back wonderful memories for me from when I was a merchant sailor and used to watch a lone albatross hanging over the stern of the ship, swooping down sometimes to almost touch the water, bit like a surfer going along between the crests in mid ocean. When you see how beautiful they are you can understand why the ancient mariner brought such horror to his ship by killing one.

  • My photos of albatross from ship didn’t quite come put, probably as I was too entranced and was watching – am glad this land shot brought memories back. I hope to read your autobiography one day, Victor.

Thank you JD – this brought back some beautiful memories for me too – sailing with albatross in close proximity to the yacht. Something magical and far away to me now but your lovely image brought it all so vividly to mind!

  • ah that is the best compliment! And wow, love your new avatar too!
