Folks, we are at a special Ships Wharf in Lely Stad Holland.

Under the VERY skilled leadership of ShipsMaster/Builder Willem Vos .. and the help of young student Carpenters and some unemployed men, the Historic ship BATAVIA was build as a exact replica of the original Batavia
In 1629 the ship Batavia, then on her maiden voyage, sank after running aground on the Houtman Abrolhos Islands some 40 miles off the coast of Western Australia (North of Perth)
Read here the whole Story

For centuries the dutch had a colony called Dutch Indies ..now Indonesia.. and its Capital Jacarta was called in the Dutch time: Batavia. The Dutch Trade Copmany who aranged all affairs over Sea was called : Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie VOC
Meaning : The United East India Company

A voyage like this normally lasted about 9 to 12 months ..reasons for the Gentleman Traders to look / build a stronghold to refresh water and food.. ( In Afrikaans the Gents where called Heeren Sewentien)

So this is when Cape Town came in the Dutch(world) picture.. Farmers from Holland where moved under favorable conditions..
to work the land and raise Cattle ..Later when all went fine more land was claimed for a few centuries .. but that is another story
It explains however why Afrikaans and Dutch are so strongly connected.. (Like Iceland and Denmark etc etc)

The Dutch over 50 years of age .. like myself .. still feel a strong connection with Sth Africa (Zuid Afrika) because of this all :-)))

Anyway.. when ever in Holland go see the Wharf in Lelystad.. there is a nice shopping area to and you can go up and inside the ship with a skilled guide to tel you all about the old days. I went 4x now and each time its new to me …
