Spark has been chosen as Pet of the Week at the shelter, and he was giving me his best impersonation of Humphrey Bogart for his photoshoot.

He’s a mix of St-Bernard and pure mutt, and he’s simply as sweet as can be!

He has been adopted very quickly!

Nikon D7000, Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D

Focal length 50mm, ISO-200, 1/60 sec. @ f/4.5

Shot in manual mode, with SB-600 and silver lined umbrella. Processed in Lightroom 3.3

Oh I love this dog’s attitude! And he is so handsome! Great portrait! I love your dog shots Johanne, you seen to capture a characterisitic of their personality in each one!

  • Thank you for your kind words, Joanne!

It takes some time to get into each shooting, we have to start by building the trust (Carole helps me tremendously with this) and get to know each other a bit more before we can get some good shots. Also, they are always very excited at the beginning, poor things! Just to get out of their enclosures and play with people is a great treat to them. It takes at least 15 to 20 minutes of play for them to calm down.

I can photograph about four pets in 2 to 2½ hours, trying to ensure at least 4-5 good shots of each one.

The work is probably a really good way to practice and obviously increase your photographic skills as well, because it certainly has proven beneficial for you! So it really is a win-win situation, because you hilight these doggies so then can get good homes and your capabilites as a photographer improve with all the varied conditions, types of dogs…etc. Bravo for the work Johanne to both you and Carol!

  • Thanks again Joanne! And I am very happy to announce that Spark has been adopted already! I just heard about it a few minutes ago. :-)
