Another experiment with the stroboscopic function of my camera and flash.

The main subject is a little transparent ball filled with liquid and glitter. I made it bounce on a flat surface (white cardboard), with the following settings.

Nikon D7000, Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D

Focal length 50mm, ISO-100, Aperture f/22, Shutter 1 sec.

Shot in manual mode, using built-in camera flash in “Repeat mode” (Output 1/8, fired 5 times, 5 Hz frequency).

Disco ball to the left reflecting some light from the brooder lamp wich was placed on the right and creating a pattern on the white cardboard background. Processed in Lightroom 3.3, including a bit of split toning, then in Photoshop CS4 for final tweaking.

My conclusions : I should have bought the pink ball instead of clear and silver… It would have been easier to control the overall effect with more contrast to work with. As it is, I made about 175 shots in order to get less than a dozen passable images. Oh well…

Amazing and fantastic! You are so creative! Love the sense of motion conveyed in this shot! Always a joy to view your new “experiments”!

  • Thank you Joanne! It’s a bit “blah” for my taste (a lot more than a bit, to tell you the truth), but I thought it might be interesting to share from a technical point of view. That’s also where the pink ball would have helped…

    Very interesting experiment, Johanne.
I suppose, as you mentioned, a pink ball may have given some contrast though I kind of like this snow ball like effect. ;)
Look forward to seeing another experiment. :)

  • Thank you Kyoko, your comment is much appreciated! :-)

Have you seen the complete experiment in my journal entry ?

Oh! I like it so much… I wich you luck for the contest at ALPA photo club.

  • Thank you Sis! As I said I don’t think I have much chances with this one, but it will be different from what the majority will submit.

I agree with Kyoko, a pink ball may give more contrast, but with this one, you make wonderfully delicate photographs! Very well worth all those shots :)

  • Thank you so much, Lenka! :-)

Super outcome here, Johanne! I hate to admit that I have tried this with NO success…LOL! Well done.

  • Thank you Wendi! As mentioned in my description, I had to make over 160 shots before I could succeed and get a few good ones… :-)
