I had to do a black & white photo with an Orange theme for my photo club tonight. Did not want to shoot bowls, pieces, or slices of oranges, because that’s what the majority will do.

So I decided instead to use the expression Orange Skin meaning (watch out, not for the faint of heart!): cellulite! Arrrgh!

This phenomenon gets more noticeable as we grow older unfortunately, hence the self-portrait of a woman going on 50.

Let me tell you that this was not an easy shot! I made exactly 64 photos in order to get this one, with the oranges carefully positioned at the right height, width and angle! I had to discard all those where my body was not standing straight and where the lighting was wrong.

My cheap Japanese flash died on me in the process, with a sudden burning smell and whisps of smoke… Will have to buy the old SB-22 from my boss until I can afford the SB-700…

Focal length 35mm, ISO-200
Aperture f/9, Shutter 1/25 sec.

Nikon D60, AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VR

Shot in manual mode. Natural light on my body, filtered through a white curtain. Fruit were lit at a 45° angle by my SB-600 at 1/16th power.

Very “Cheeky” indeed! All your hard work paid off brilliantly. Lovely texture and the concept is wonderful. Sorry to hear about your flash.

  • Thank you Shawn! The SB-600 is safe, it’s the other unknown Japanese brand that died. I was expecting it (although not today), so it’s not a big deal! LOL!
