Feeling Blue for Christmas by Johanne Brunet

Feeling blue is not always due to loneliness or melancholy…

In this case it comes from a calming blue light glowing softly on a sparkling mirror ball.

To get this blue lighting, I used the blue lights from a multicolour Christmas lights strand, hiding all other colours as much as possible. We can see that I was not completely successful because there is a little pinkish red reflecting on the ball.

Shot As Is, no photoshopping.

Love this Johanne! I like the soft tones, and especially that little bit of pink light that crept through.

But that little rogue red light, makes the picture for me. It shows that you didn’t just artificially turn everything blue in PS… :-) Looking forward to the rest of the series!

  • Thanks George! You’re right, it confirms that it’s genuinely as is. No PS on this series! There is one that I have to reshoot. It’s like Chasing the Christmas Blues Away but I used a white LED light to paint over the ball instead of a laser pen. The bright white LED light made me realize when I looked at those photos on the computer, that I should take a few seconds to shine my props before using them. Smudges everywhere!!! So I’ll reshoot, probably tonight or tomorrow night with a clean mirror ball…

Lovely. I like the sparkle against blurry background.

  • Thank you Monika! And the background is so simple; only a plain white window blind that I hung to the shelve above my working table. I just unroll it to whatever length I need.

Beautiful composition! And yeah that series of little pink lights reflected in all that blue is amazing!

  • Thank you Joanne! I’m always surprised at how vividly coloured these Christmas lights can be when shot with a long exposure.
