Smoke Art in T-shirt Design
I recently told my friend Vikram Franklin that I found his smoke art really inspiring, and that I would give it a try very soon. Well I did!
However, I was not really satisfied with my first tries. I am struggling with lighting issues, because I do not own a separate flash unit for my Nikon D60. I don’t have any window receiving enough sunlight to make it possible in natural light either, so I’ll need to keep trying for a while before coming up with acceptable wall art.
Anyway, there were a few from the lot that I found interesting enough by their shape, despite their questionable quality.
This is how the t-shirt below came to be. It has been uploaded to my separate Greeting Cards and Clothing portfolio

That is a very cool t-shirt Johanne! Hey, try using a desk lamp off to one side. It is pretty much what I did :)
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Shelly! Actually I tried with one on both sides, so maybe that was too much, and it’s better on only one side?
Squealia
Excellent

Thank you Celia! :-)

Hey – this is different (VERY) from any smoke art I’ve seen – love it!
On the light – One tutorial I read said to use a desk lamp. Make a snoot by rolling paper into a cone and directing it onto the smoke (otherwise the light gets into the lens). I worked in a closed room with all lights off (used a flashlight to see what was happening).
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you for the comment and great advice Vikram! Will certainly give it another try using these tips. I’ll keep you posted! :-)
Francesca Rizzo
fantastic work johanne, looks really great as a tee
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Francesca! A tee is about the only thing I could have used it for, with a greeting card, perhaps. Maybe I’ll get better results next time, with all the great advice I received from Vikram and from Shelly in a Bmail.

Cool shirt, Johanne…..smoke art is on my list of ‘must try’..... just have to be careful not to gas myself like V did!! :)
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Wendi! And don’t buy vanilla either; it becomes kinda sickly sweet after the second stick or cone… :-(
