Drifting Into Adulthood - Collaboration
The long crossing through adolescence and into adulthood is not always an easy one. For many young people, it often seems like a neverending path flooded with tears, a river of dark and murky waters…
The model in this shot is Abi, my RB friend Shelly’s beautiful daughter who is 15. She was photographed by her very talented mom
Work uploaded for a challenge in the Collaborations group.

The challenge consisted in using one or both of the two images on the left as a starting point to create something new. |

I chose to use both images, but also to add a 3rd collaborator.

Vikram Franklin has kindly accepted to let me use this photo of boat. |
I also added some textures of my own, as described below:
Finally another photo of mine used as a texture:

I use this photo of the St-Lawrence river in the fog very often in composites. This time, it was used in at least 7 layers with various blending modes and opacities. |
Please note that I may still make a few modifications to it before voting begins… but then again, maybe not.

Brilliant collaboration, Johanne….You really are a master at this.
Love the mood you’ve created here…adolescence certainly is a very difficult time for kids – your interpretation is very poignant. Beautiful light on Abi and V’s boat…. love it!
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Wendi! Your comment makes me feel very happy, and much less insecure. When I do something like this, I’m always afraid of doing too much or not enough…
Shelly Hiebert
Wow! This is awesome Johanne! Thanks for including all of the information. It looks like it was a lot of work! And cool work it is :) I agree with Wendi on the mood and the story you have created here. Love it and thanks so much for participating in the challenge and good luck to you :)
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Shelly, I’m so glad that you like it. I didn’t mean to portray Abi as a sad teenager because I don’t believe her to be unhappy, but I’ve seen so many of them struggling with the sadness of life, made unbearable by an overflow of hormones. I thought that the concept was an interesting one. :-)
Shelly Hiebert
Well she looks sad and lost in the original photo so it worked well for your image you created! So did this take forever to do?
Johanne Brunet replied
Close to forever! LOL! I can’t really say how long I worked on it because I spent an hour or two at a time, then stepped back to work on something else for a while. I went back to it the day after for another hour or two, etc. I would say that it took about 6 to 8 hours in all, not counting the 2 hours that I spent this morning working on a moon with a crying face that I finally decided not to use… It takes me a long time because I can’t seem to make up my mind, and keep trying things and discarding layers! LOL!
Majikat
very effective… wonderful result…
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you so much for your kind comment Adam! :-)
TickerGirl
This is a great idea Johanne and very well executed. You are so good working with the layers!
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you for your lovely comment Monika! I really love working with textures; it becomes quite addictive. Just ask Ursula! LOL!
Squealia
Excellent work
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Celia!
SNAPPYDAVE
WOW … what happened to that road LOL
Johanne Brunet replied
Somebody was really sad… and flooded the road with tears! ;-)
Carole Brunet
Awesome work in wonderful collaboration. You are very clever!
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Sister, Your daughter almost joined Abi in this one. I had her face into a crying mood with tears running down her face, but finally decided not to use it. The only place where it fit was really too close to Abi’s head and it broke the balance.
Colleen Milburn
Wow. This is amazing – I’d love to be able to do this type of work!!
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Colleen! It’s easier than it looks in terms of technique. The most difficult part is having an idea of which textures and images you need to use to get the final result, and blending them correctly. One also needs a great deal of patience because these things take time. :-)
Colleen Milburn
Hmmm, patience is not my forte but one I realise I need to work on! I’ve just joined the group and look forward to voting in the challenge ;))
Gary Murison
Congratulations on winning the challenge Johanne. Very imaginative and creative use of the images.
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Gary! This is my first version, and not the one submitted to the Collaborations challenge.
Gary Murison
Oooops. Well, it is still an excellent piece of work :) :)
Johanne Brunet replied
My bad! I should mention it in the description with a link to the final version. In fact, I’ll do that right now! :-)
