Oblivious
Young people’s paraphernalia certainly looks like a safety hazard when crossing streets or using stairs… Smoke in the eyes, music blasting in the headset, and attention focused on the cellphone, exchanging text messages. Completely oblivious to their surroundings… are they getting disconnected from the world around them?
This shot was made in response to our good friend Shawn who challenged us to take a sneaky pic of a person(s) without their knowledge , adding that it should be made from a low angle.
I was really sneaky for this one because the stairway was just beside the lobby of a building. I went inside and found that I had this great POV thru the side window, and no one could see me shooting to my heart’s content! The ambiant light was low though, so it’s a bit grainy.

Here is another shot I made for the same challenge:

Excellent capture and text! I really like the urban backdrop. And you know what? It may be just a candid snapshot, but you’ve managed to get the composition spot on with the subject on the thirds, counterbalanced with the streetlight and with lead-in lines from the railing and the backdrop building. Brilliant!

Wow! Thank you for your great comment George, it really encourages me to try more of those! Now, if I could only afford a new lens… :-)

This is such a powerful image Johanne!! I also agree with George. You really captured this one perfectly!! These ones don’t come planned either so to get it right the first time is amazing!! I see how you planned the angle but to capture the imagery in this one you had to be Johnny-on-the-spot!! Well done my friend…and I sure agree with your description!! This one is a winner for sure in lots of categories!!
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you so much Blair! Wow! I feel a bit overwhelmed by your comment and George’s… I’m deeply touched by your appreciation.
And yes, I spent several minutes on tiptoes, waiting for someone to walk down the stairs. I made several shots but this was the last one and the best.
I remember also that my sister walked up to me at that point, wanting to show me a shot she had made, and I asked her to wait a bit because I didn’t want to miss the opportunity and I had to get the timing perfectly right. :-)

Great to see you took on the challenge as well Johanne and didn’t just leave it up to the boys! This is GREAT! It is a funny thing to do isn’t it? Taking candids of strangers. You managed this very well and are giving the boys a run for their money I would say! Nice work girl :D
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Shelly! I hop that you won’t leave me all by myself in this one, please come and give me a hand! :-)
Carole Brunet
Superb shot sister! The POV is perfect and the reflections in the building are awesome. Well done!
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you Sister! That’s the last shot I made, remember when you wanted to show me something on your screen and I told you: Just a sec! I don’t want to miss this ! Well, that’s the result of your patience with me! LOL!
Ursula Rodgers
Now that was VERY sneaky!! Excellent shot Jo, and I love how you’ve tied this in with youngsters who do seem to shut themselves off from the world with their myriad of electronic gadgets. Am tempted to have another go at this sneaky thing myself!
Johanne Brunet replied
Yesssss, please do Ursula! I’m starting to feel a bit lonely with the guys over there! LOL!
Johanne Brunet replied
Forgot to add this important thing: Thank you my friend ! LOL!

Thank you Celia! :-)

fabulous capture – wonderfully timed – so great to have challenged yourself – I find I get really nervous when I’m trying to get sneaky pics :)
Johanne Brunet replied
Thank you so much Debb. I guess that it takes a lot of practice to get used to it. I’m still very uncomfortable with it as well.

johanne,
bravo! Well done, through a glass darkly or not….in addition to your narrative about which world young people are in, Cyber or real, you got the added bonus of the reflected image!
nicely captured.

Thank you for your appreciation Phil, makes my day! :-)
Bradley Shawn ...
The most brilliant capture my friend. This is what the challenge is about! Top marks.
Johanne Brunet replied
Aaawww! Thank you Shawn, what a nice thing to say! It WAS fun, and my sister and I had a great time looking for such opportunities. I loved it. Now I have to open that photo of yours and see what I can do about it… ;-)
