Enjoying the Day
A group of people who make up this great nation of ours are the Amish.
I was sampling cheeses at a shop when I happened to notice these girls enjoying their ice cream. Their job that day was to sell handmade baskets.
Taken outside Berlin, Ohio.

MariaVikerkaar
Very unusual picture!
How do you call those families? I’d like to find more information.
Joseph Rieg replied
Their sect is called “Amish”. They reside mostly in the states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Many years ago, they escaped religious persecution from Europe and sailed to America. Their primary language is a type of German. They are fantastic people who keep to themselves, divesting themselves of modern technology.
MariaVikerkaar
Thank you, Joseph!

Like a glimpse of the past – but that says it all about the Amish way of life. I am impressed by their way of life -we may all join them in the future(!) – but don’t know much about them.
Beautiful picture. LoL

Hi Joe, these look like Amish girls. Very neat photo. It looks like something out of the 1700s. My great grandfather, who was Pennsylvania Dutch, had Amish friends when he lived back there. Love photos like this. Nice work. Ed
Joseph Rieg replied
You are right, Ed, they are Amish. I got this shot in northeastern ohio in a very expansive Amish/Mennonite community.

The Amish are such a peaceful and self-reliant group. I was heartbroken over the tragedy that was perpetrated on them a couple of years ago. I admire the Amish very much. Lovely picture. xoxo
Joseph Rieg replied
Thanks, Lori,,,,I actually have a wider view of this in my profile….yes, they are nice people and have been around them in both Ohio and Pennsylvania.

WOW what a great picture, can I ask how you achived this great effect?
Malcolm
Joseph Rieg replied
It was post=edited in Photoshop, then cropped (I have the wider shot on here too), then an Orton effect applied.
Natasha Harsh
A wonderful portrait. If Sargeant were alive,he’d be using computer programs, instead of paint and brush, as well. Love the little section you left light in the negative space above the younger girl’s hand. It balances the older girls hands and cone section and help guide the eye to the younger girl’s face.
Super all around photo.
Joseph Rieg replied
Thank you, Natasha, you are a very observant person.
Sensiworld
Great !
Joseph Rieg replied
Why thank you, Sylvia.

Margaret Shark
This is an outstanding image. I do chuckle though. I guess the modern pacifier is one of the modern inventions that has infiltrated the group. I know my grandbabies could not live without it-or their parents. It is a glorious picture.
Joseph Rieg replied
Thanks Margaret. Yes it sort of is a contrast, old clothes and ice cream and the pacifier.
Judith Hayes
Beautiful Picture!

You are suppose to show the amish faces in photography. It is against their religion and belief. In Wooster, Ohio, there is a lot of amish and you will never find faces in any of the photography.
Joseph Rieg replied
Dear Gretchen, if the Amish choose to sell their wares in a public environment, then they have no expectation of privacy, religion is not an issue in this situation. They have sent their children into the general public for profit. I did not invade their privacy to any extent on their private land.
Veikko Suikkanen
I thought this first old style painting. Really magnificent portrait Joseph!
Thank you that featured my work as guest host group “Art By Bubble Hosts”
