Pink Magnolias by Joe Cartwright

I have just finished doing this painting in my class. It was painted over a couple of sessions and with more detail than I normally put in my landscape paintings, but it is just the way I feel I have to paint these flowers.

I selected this subject so my students could learn how to do more detailed work as well as how to use masking liquid with their watercolor painting.

The painting was done on Arches 300 g.s.m. cold press paper, size is a quarter sheet (37cm x 27cm).

I will be putting this up on my PaintingWithWatercolors web site as a demonstration in a little while.

Happy painting,

Joe Cartwright

This one wowed me, so different to your usual paintings. The light through the flowers is stunning!

  • Hi Norah,
Glad you liked it. I usually only do one type of flower each year, this year it is Magnolias I think.

This certainly has that bit of extra something….. what’s the word I’m looking for instead of ‘WOW’ – LOL! …..What about PIZAZZ ! Yep – it has something amazing about it. Beautiful light effects, beautiful background and those deep fuschia pinks and the paler colours and blues are all embroidered together with your brush to make this amazing watercolour! It is just DELICIOUS!

  • Wow Lynda, Thank you!

this is simply stunning – such beautiful work. This is over the top good!

  • I’m glad you liked it Betty, thank you. I do enjoy doing flower paintings, though I enjoy so many other subjects I don’t get to paint flowers that often.
    Thanks again.

Gorgeous detail work! I love painting detailed flowers but they do take some time.

  • Thank you Leslie, Yes they do take a lot of time. But they can also be quite relaxing.
