Unconditional.

“I love you,” he said, as he turned slowly towards her.
Her chestnut hair sparkled in the sun’s twilight, and as she looked up to show an acceptance that she had heard and understood, her eyes glistened with moisture.
Gingerly she walked over to him and sat down beside him. She lay her head in his lap and they sat there quietly, enjoying each other’s company.
Tomorrow he would say goodbye to her forever. But for now he would cherish this final night.
They had spent the last 15 years as soul mates, but it had come to an end. It was time to let go.
His hand gently stroked her head, thinking of all the things they had done together, all the great times they had shared.
Her eyes closed, and her breathing slowed. She was slowly drifting off.
It’s time for bed, he thought.
Ever so gently he lifted her head easing himself away, trying not to wake her. To no avail. Her eyes flew open, daring him to leave.
‘Bed,’ he said.
He got up and walked toward the bedroom and quietly opened the door. As he entered the room, he heard her behind him.

The slow soft steps of her four paws following him into the bedroom for the last time.

Unconditional.
