Betty by

A close up shot of my cat Betty. I used the macro setting on my Canon A75. I am sure she is not too impressed with me since I awoke her from a nap.
She had curled up onto the brown leather chair in the living room. A spot she likes and was sleeping under the light of a lamp.
I find it difficult to get good photos of her since she is all black. So I keep trying different angles to see how I can capture her face and expression.
Shot taken Winter 2008
Betty was rescued approximately 7 years ago and underwent horrendous physical abuse. It took her two years to warm up to us, prior to that she spent a long time hiding in the basement and did not want us to pick her up or pet her. Now she willingly lays down for aa weekly brushing. She is
a loving pet but is wary of other people, or animals and runs and hides when confronted by strangers.

You have achieved a great image where the eyes are the focus! The black and the background colour work well to make this a very beautiful photo! Well done.

  • Thank you so much Mariaan!

this is adorable, Joanne! the softness ads to the capture. Have you tried catnip, yet?

Atmospheric & moody Joanne, suits any cats temprement in my book. Tip on how its done, the way you just did it is perfect.
You could try stuffing the cat but that would be cruel & I wouldn’t support that approach. Cats seldom like to pose & I prefer natural light as opposed to any other when ever possible. Any relective surface or proper photographic reflector to throw light back into the subject would help if you were after more detail in the fur.
Its really down to the cat, if it stays still long enough you can play around with different exposure settings. Every cat shot I’ve ever taken though was rushed as the cat was not willing to stop for long.

Just had a thought; there was a song about Black Betty a few years back. I wonder if that’s where you got the name?

  • No, she had a French name Bibi that I couldn’t live with when I got her, hence the English sounding one. But my husband calls her Black Betty and hums the song to her all the time. Glad you came back for this comment :-)
