Woodland Walking Trail
A groomed walking trail in the woods at Oka Park, during the winter, and an beach/park access road in the summer, Quebec CANADA. There was not a soul in sight today when we walked there. The silence was incredible, all we could hear was the crunch of the snow beneath our feet, the occasional rustle of our winter coats as we moved our arms, and our breath as we inhaled and exhaled. The trees shielded us from the wind. It was a very peaceful experience. At the very end of this path is the beach, now of course completely hidden by a layer of snow, but an inviting open space when we arrived, and we happily made our way to the lodge for a fireside sip of hot chocolate.
Taken mid-afternoon on December 31st/08, New Year’s Eve.

Beautiful photo, and the accompanying narrative is wonderful, as it is with all your photos. But, for me, I can’t look at a shot like this without recalling a few lines from a novel which impressed themselves upon me at an early age, and which resonate with me still. I share them because they use the metaphor of “The Forest Aisle” to convey quite a different mood, a different attitude towards life than does your work, which seems to me very much more optimistic. more ‘connected’ to others:
”....he saw his life down the solemn vista of a forest aisle, and he knew he would always be the sad one: caged in that little round of skull, imprisoned in that beating and most secret heart, his life must always walk down lonely passages. Lost. He understood that men were forever strangers to one another, that no one ever comes really to know any one, that imprisoned in the dark womb of our mother, we come to life without having seen her face, that we are given to her arms a stranger, and that, caught in that insoluble prison of being, we escape it never, no matter what arms may clasp us, what mouth may kiss us, what heart may warm us. Never, never, never, never, never.”
Thomas Wolfe, Look Homeward, Angel
Again, I reference this because your image permits both views, as art at its very best contemplates an interaction between the piece and the observer, with the sense of the work at times largely a reflection of the individuals mood or sensibilities at the time. Here, one can see the forest aisle as a metaphor for a sheltering place, one which leads somewhere – to a campfire, a place of communion; or one can see it as a vehicle to express profound lonliness.
Truly a beautiful photo.

This looks so inviting, Joanne. I don’t want to see winter end, in a way. Love the converging lines and the tree branches arching over the trail. Beautiful work.
