Courage

Joanne Bradley

Courage

This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything.
It takes great courage to face the inevitable.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. Currently, there are more than 24 million people in the world with dementia—this is estimated to rise to 81 million by the year 2040.6
Statistics taken from both the Canadian and American Alzeihmer’s Society.

A strong and emotional image. A very good statement and thank you for the great narrative.

My wife worked with the elderly for many years, many of them suffering from various forms of dementia. It is impossible not to get involved, especially if you are as caring as my wife is. She had so many wonderful, tender and incredibly sad and heartbreaking times with her ladies and gentlemen, but she loved every minute and loved them all.

  • Robin Brown

Often referred to as the long good bye. Its a sad ending to any life & painful for those loved one’s who are powerless to help. I often believe those who suffer the illness are already free from this life & what we see is an empty shell with nothing more than echo’s of the person we loved.
This is a powerful image Joanne & personally I don’t think it could have been taken better.
If I had my way this image would be used in a positive way to help raise awareness & funding for research into this devastating illness.

Joanne, welcome to our group. This is a provocative piece, both photograph and writing, and a perfect case where in my opinion they are inseparable. Alzheimer’s scares me terribly, I have Parkinson’s Disease and everything I read says it does not lead to Alzheimer’s, but I think I am more prone to Alzheimer’s because of the Parkinson’s. hi joanne, i wonder if the fact the baby boomers are having this mental awareness problem may have something to do with the genes from their parents war truamas. and that it filtered into the babies born of that time era. many soldiers wanted and tried to put the war out of their minds, out of memeory, wonder if their is any possibility of trauma being past on to the child. you know what i’m trying to say. nice photo. it does capture the emotions of loneliness, memory, and maybe even sadness and regret. my dad has had some moments of confusion and it is very hard to remember him always up and doing and going and knowing everything and then , stops!
