School's Out
Taken at Kempenfelt Bay, Lake Simcoe, Barrie, Ontario Canada on Monday June 2nd/08. Leaning over the docks I noticed this school of minnows that kept dispersing and rejoining in intricate patterns in the water. My husband did not think I should upload this to RB but I find it an interesting abstract of the underwater world.

Fantastic capture!! Tell your husband we are glad you posted!!

I think what makes it so special is that they are alive and forming these designs of their own accord. No one (well, except for God) told them to do this. I would love to have seen this with you.
Joanne Bradley replied
It was pretty special seeing the different patterns. We walked by the first time and I was scared when we made our way back they would be gone but they were still there forming and scattering and reforming again in a different way….
RLHall

The lines are great in this, and I love the contrasting colours of the fish and the water. The more I look at this, the more I see. For instance, there’s a real feeling of depth to the water because of the layers of fish.

Not sure why you shouldn’t upload this one Joanne. It looks like the skin of the Puffa fish when its inflated. I suspect this might be a mass mating & that might explain your husbands thinking & the colour of the water.
Works well as an abstract. Might even sell in a fishy mag on the top shelf.
Ian McKenzie
Great pattern and a great shot Joanne!
Catherine Davis
Wow, what a fantastic and interesting shot! They are moving in such an ordered pattern and your photo shows this so well! I love it! They look close to the top or in shallow water? Great photo, glad you added it!

It was shallow water Catherine and a very bright sunny day, I think I left my flash on, and I know for sure I got right down on the dock so I could take the closest photo possible! It was amazing to watch them. Thank you for your kind comment!

Garth Smith
Great shot, great colour contrast, great lines leading the eye into the shot from the bottom right corner and bottom left corner as well. Maybe it didnt rock hubbys boat but its a very good image. A fave. Its a little bit blown in the upper middle right but water and sun will do that sometimes.
Have you tried to fix that?
CarolM
I agree with you Joanne. It’s a fine image and so interesting how the fish are fanned out.
jesika
Hubby was definitely wrong. It’s a wonderful image, full of life and movement. It’s interesting that some birds “dance” in the same highly choreographed way.
A magical image.

Steve Buffington
Hey Joann. We are both featured in the Nikon group. To me, this group is one of the tops. The shots featured are almost daunting. So well done!! Oh, and show the hubby.
Joanne Bradley replied
Thank you Steve! I am revising my reply since I just realized that I was aware of the feature but got caught up in your enthusiasm! Yes, I agree that the features in the Nikon group are great, since I only got my Nikon in May 2008 and this was one of the first photos I got that was really different in late May 2008, I am particularly pleased. I am quite proud of it and show hubby how wrong he was every chance I get….lol!
Steve Buffington
There you go. Gives you the upper edge, which of course is always important in a marriage (kidding of course). Again, congrats.

Joanne, I’ve been meaning to tell you since you joined Solo, and I saw this submitted and realized whom it belonged to, that it’s always been my favorite group avatar, as I scroll through the groups on my overview page. I absolutely love this abstract (as it is, abstract realism)! Fav.
Joanne Bradley replied
Thank you so much! I just got my first DSLR camera maybe two weeks before and was visiting my daughter. We took a walk and I spied these minnows in the water, got down on my hands and knees and knowing nothing about what elements I should cover for the right exposure, snapped away and was very pleased on arriving home to find this! :-)
DebraLee Wiseberg
Joanne I think I commented on this once before but I will comment again. Well captured and so glad you have added it to our new group!
Debra

You have a fine eye for these patterns!
Elizabeth McPhee 14 days ago
It’s so dynamic – I think it’s the spreading “lines” of the fish – I can almost feel their movement in the water.
Anne McKinnell 14 days ago
What a stunning image! The fish make a wonderful pattern of movement. Aren’t they amazing! I also like the colour of the water and the negative space on the right and left sides. Great job!!
