Sterling Sharpe breaks away from an NC State defender and scores a touchdown. He went on play with the Greenbay Packers for six seasons before permanently being sidelined by a neck injury. He was All Pro NFL 5 times and is in the Packer’s Hall of Fame.

Olympus OM-3. Tokina 200mm. Kodak Tri-X 400.

the good old days of sports photography where you had to manually focus! I was a college newspaper photographer on the sidelines. I did have a 5fps Motordrive though so I would rack focus and hope one frame would be sharp in a burst.

Great shot, this crowd is quite a bit more excited than the one in my photo, love it! I put mine up to enter a challenge in “Your Country’s Best” group. I get the manual focus degree of difficulty. I shot the Pan American games in Mexico City in the 70’s for AP as a stinger with a manual Nikkormat without a Motor Drive, I called it a learning experience! LOL Tony

  • my favorite part of having a press pass as a starving student was the huge buffet at halftime in the pressbox! yes, the learning curve. if you didn’t get the shot you didn’t get a pass for the next game.

When I got my photos back to the office and developed the editor would take a loupe run the film strip through his fingers looking through the loop for something he liked. If there was nothing he would drop the film strip on the floor and move on to the next strip, meanwhile people would walk through the area with your negs crunching under their footsteps. I was a rookie and soon learned that hitting the local cantina after 14 hours of shooting with the old pros was a lot more fun than watching your negs get trampled.. He’d go through a 36 shot strip in under a minute. When he saw one he liked he’d give it to the lab tech to print that frame and then maybe it would go out on the wire. I got paid by prints that went out on the wire, ten bucks, and sometimes something extra if it got extra play in newspapers or made a front page or the front page of the sports section. The first day I walked in and another photographer told me I got the front page of the LA Times I almost cried which in the Macho, hard drinking world of press photgraphers of the time would have been a big mistake. That night at the cantina I sensed a little respect I hadn’t seen before. Somebody even asked me what I shot that day, if I thought i had any keepers. God it felt great to be one of the boys!
