this was one of those where i started far away and kept taking one step closer waiting, pop a shot off, move closer waiting for her to bolt, but was amazed at how close she let me get.

James, great catch here! I have always loved these big woodpeckers. We had them up in Montana too; you could here ‘em banging on a tree a mile away. The only woodpecker larger than the pileated is the Ivory-billed; and sadly is probably now extinct. Well seen and captured, Amigo! Cheers! Chris

thats a corker James. maybe you came across the only deaf bird that lived!!! strangely enough i just missed a woodpecker last week, god knows why but it was in the front garden just walking around. like you i was tiptoe through two bushes, got set and ready just about to open the e510, when one of my cats come bolting out of nowhere and threw himself at it. scared the life out of me!!!

WOW! This is amazing! Pileateds are notoriously shy., so lucky you! There is a pair of Pileateds that roost in the woods next to my parent’s home in Hurley, WI. I’ve tried to get a shot numerous times, but no luck yet. I covet your 600 lens. I do have a shot of a tree that they destroyed. I think I’ll add that to my page today.

woodpeckers have to be some of my favorite birds! i’ve yet to see the pileated but was blessed with 1 male and 2 female ivory billed when i was down in Tennessee! unfortunately i had about 20 hikers creating mayhem on the trail behind me so after he walked onto my path the 3 of them took off. lucky you!
