The H.H. Richardson Complex is also called the State Insane Asylum, State Lunatic Asylum and the Buffalo State Hospital. The Buffalo Psychiatric Center located at 400 Forest Avenue, Buffalo, N.Y.

History of the State Insane Asylum: Dr. James White, a Buffalo physician , proposed to the state legislature that an asylum be built in Buffalo, New York. Through his work, the Buffalo State Hospital organization was established in 1869.
In 1870 H. H. Richardson, was chosen as architect; for the new mental hospital. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place in June 1871, and by 1880 the first patients were received in the complex. Construction was completed by 1895. The facility was closed in 1974
Widely thought to be haunted.

    Wow…an amazing image of what was no doubt a god-awful place. Those creeping choking vines certainly add a feeling of being sucked into a deep dark nightmare…with no possibility of escape. Spooky indeed!

    Amazing shot, and the history is interesting. It must of been a nightmare place in the 1800, I know they weren’t enlightened when it came to mental illness then. Even though they did build a hospital for them, today we are enlightened and still we throw the mentally ill out on the streets for lack of adequate funding. I don’t know which is worse.
