waitress

She brushes wisps of hair away from her sleepy, gentle face and peers out into the abyss

a chasm of disembodied lips chatting away in their animated fashion,

they, lip-syncing a screaming truth, she of spent feet and hands that belie an obscured youth

as she washes off the grease and stickiness left over from lunch and trying to crawl out of mediocrity

the floating checks like a baby’s mobile creak out yesterday’s lullaby

she is suddenly afraid to touch the tables again for fear of losing skin and ink and identity

hands retreat behind a blotted apron with marshack’s smile that she whips at her angry manager

with his gaunt harrowed face like a cadaverous blistered grim reaper

she feeds him her footsteps, an echo into the night chasing a train just as lonely,

she entombs her clientele in the depths of her purse

and follows her treasure map to a city to where X marks the spot.
