Emptiness

Emptiness

My first meaningful image from my new Nikon D80. Shot on a beach on new years day. I like the immediacy of digital, I dont like the bulk of the camera compared to my Contax G2 and I am not sure the quality of image is as good straight from the camera. We will see where this brave new world will take me.

shot with 18-70mm kit lense.

Let me know what you think of the image

Hi Ian, looks fine to me (perhaps the bottom part of the sky is a bit overexposed; photoshop?)

Thanks Filip. I would agree about the overexposed sky which is due to the fact that I over exposed the image in the camera as it was a grey day and I wanted to full the dark figures out of the emptiness so they become the focus.

great effect..perhaps the sky highlight gives a certain depth and ‘emptiness’!?

Ian, congrats on the new camera.. and keep up with it – this is great! Yeah, the sky is overexposed but I can see why you did it, I would have done the same! I think this would have been a great shot with or without the people – very minimal, but I do love the human interest and the framing is spot on! Great stuff!

This is a good shot mate. I use a D80 myself and I know what you mean. 10 years ago I had a Nikon N2020 and a decent 50mm lens which produced fantasticly sharp results on film. These days, I accept that loss of quality for the immediacy of digital, ease of editability and economy. Just shoot everything RAW and bracket up and down and if necessary dodge and burn to your hearts content in p.shop.

I agree it is a well done shot. My first impression was three had just crossed over from somewhere ala Stargate ;-) Super!!

I really like the feel of this – a sense of desolation and loneliness, of being small and vulnerable in a vast and beautiful landscape. Superb composition!

I quite like the over exposure on this which gives a great contrast against the people

Lovely pastel beach and sky and the framing is fantastic.
The three people could not be placed better as the
reflection in the foreground puddles really links the
    three horizontal fields.

Excellent composition Ian. Also like the high tones of the image contrasting with the figures. Very nice.

great shot, the sky is overexposed but who cares the shot works, i would have used my nd grad filters here, to just balance the sky and foreground

I agree with the over exposed comment. This shot was taken on a dull day so I over exposed to burn the shot in. I quite like the apocaliptic feel of the shot with the burnt sky.
