During the afternoon of July 4, 2004, as I was walking towards the waterfront park in the historic Paulus Hook neighborhood of Jersey City which has a great view of the fireworks from Liberty State Park, I was struck by this orangey blue grey cat lying camouflaged in front of this orangey blue grey Italianate door. The cat seemed to enjoy the fact that most people were walking by oblivious to its existence. I very slowly and carefully crept as close as possible without scaring it off, and while the cat peered at me through one slit eye, I tried to frame both this stealthy cat and this amazing door.
Exhibitions:
This image was first shown at the New York Open Center, 83 Spring Street, my first SOHO show, July – September 2005. (NYOC has since moved to 22 East 30th Street). My other pieces were nature images but the curator was a cat lover and just had to show this piece. Angela Roberts just had to have it, thank you so much for my first sale of this image! And thanks to Andrea Artemis Morin who bought the second print .
December 2009: Thanks to Jamie Keller, who bought a laminated print for her brother
Jersey City Museum June 25-September 14 2008 This photograph was chosen as the centerpiece of the I Love Jersey City photography exhibition at the Jersey City Museum
This Italianate door, on Washington Street, near Sussex Street, has since been sanded and stained brown, so this lovely antique orange blue grey patina no longer exists … and this image is now an historic document.
