a very pretty butterfly jimmy … what’s she trailing?

  • Thanks Carol.Yes,I agree it’s a small(wingspan hardly 2 cm) but pretty looking species.
She not trailing anything. It’s a dry stem she’s resting on.;)

Mmmm, IS she a Blue or is she a Brown Argus? The gold “hearts” at the edge of the wings are very well defined and the dark splodge on the upper wings…it can be very difficult to decide whether you’ve got a brown female Blue or a Brown Argus sometimes. I had a photo of a female Common Blue which about 10 years after it was taken, was shown to an expert who said it was a BA, the first recorded in my area since 1795.
But which ever it is, it’s a lovely photo, one I would be happy, VERY happy to have taken

  • Thanks Jesika.
Yes,it’s a difficult species to determine.Perhaps you’re right and it is a Brown Argus.I don’t know how common that species is in our area. You were very lucky though!Maybe your expert can have a look here too…In any case, she’s a very pretty butterfly.:)

Did you manage to get a shot of the under wing? That could help.
In Britain, they tend to live in small units, 4 or 5 in my area is a good number, no idea how they survive.
I’ve seen females which are very dark blue and some which are very brown, but there has usually been a blue tinge, especially around the body.
I don’t know which it is, just that it’s a very pretty image

  • No,unfortunately no shot of the underwing.I only managed to take a few shots of the upper side and then she flew off.
    Thanks,Jim
