A rare and special moment.A big female mantis(Mantis religiosa)eating a wall-lizard.Spain.
mantis religiosa, wall lizard
Thanks for viewing my pictures and taking the time to comment.Much appreciated!
I’m a dutch artist and nature-photographer(especially macro)currently based in N-Spain.
Good god.. did you do this with photoshop? I so love praying mantis.. they are my only bug I absolutely love..
Thanks for commenting!Mantids are my favourite kind of insects too! No,no photoshop. It’s real, but it happens very seldom. Most of the time mantids eat other insects, but occassionally the bigger species seize prey like small frogs, mice, birds or like in this case lizards. It was the first time I witnessed this.Cheers,Jim

HAHAHA great shot I wonder about it? I thought they were eating only bugs. But this ones a real killer.
Thanks for your nice comment,David.Yes,normally they eat insects but very rarely the bigger species seize prey like small frogs, mice, birds,or like in this case, lizards.Cheers,Jim
Wow thats a real insight into these creatures !Very interesting indeed. No wonder I was always nervous around them real killers I see. Thanks for sharing that with me. In that case I gotta give ya a fav how long did you have to wait to get that shot or do you have them in a cage and raise them?
This praying mantis(Mantis religiosa)is a very common species in Spain, where I live. This big female was living in our backyard for some time. One morning I saw her eating this wall-lizard(also a very common species)starting with the lizards’ head. It’s a terrible way to die, eaten alive!I was feeling very sorry for the poor lizard, but that’s live.Es la vida!
Well you got a super shot maybe you send it to national Geographic they would love that baby!!Good luck and thanks again.
