Looking to Mt Kinabalu – covered by cloud, this Memorial is located in Kundasang, Ranau, about 108 km from Kota Kinabalu. The Memorial takes the form of a walled garden and it was built to honour all those killed in the death march of the Second World War. Those ignored and forgotten about by generals all to eager to please the larger allied force commanders. The death march was ordered by the Japanese in January 1945. 2500 prisoners-of-war (1800 Australian and 700 British soldiers) marched from Sandakan to Ranau, a distance of 240 km. As these men died by the side of muddy tracks and in the jungle their actual graves were never maked, hence the memorial takes the place of grave markers. Only six survived the terrible trek across mountainous and forested terrain.

    Makes sense..

“A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety.”  ~Ansel Adams
