Artist's Description

Broadleaf Arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia) can be food for Beavers and parts can be consumed by humans. Interestingly, the plant has male flowers toward the tips with female flowers lower and closer to the leaf. Wikipedia quote – Male flowers are easily distinguished from female due to the dissimilarity This photo shows the white male flowers. The females are green orbs. The plant’s leaves are the shape of an arrowhead which is the inspiration for the common name. This plant has no stem! I’ve not tried, but I read that they are easily propagated and make a tasty dish after harvesting in Autumn.
Photo taken in late August in a protected wetland in Macon County in the small town of Franklin, North Carolina, USA.
