As the first floret on a blossoming Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) bush opens in the midday sun, a Hoverfly (or two) visits a protruding anther, the pollen-bearing part of a stamen. The Rhododendron is a favorite flowering shrub native to the southern Appalachians.
Rhododendron is also known as Great Rhododendron, Great Laurel, Rosebay Rhododendron, American Rhododendron, Big Rhododendron, Late Rhododendron, Summer Rhododendron, White Rhododendron, Big Leaf Laurel, Deer Tongue Laurel, Calico Bush, Spoonwood Rose Tree, Rose Bay and Bayis.
