Last Dance At Roosting Time

Alight, land, perch,
Fly, float, flutter,
Alight, land, perch,
Flit, leap, trip the light fantastic
Alight, land, perch,
Take to the air,
Alight, land, perch,
Settle, sit, sleep

European Starlings flock flew at the end of the day looking for a roosting place, a few nice twigs to spend the night. They moved like an iridescent dance, lighting and swooning then taking flight again. They are a mesmerizing and beautiful sight to behold.

These birds are an invasive species, not native to North America. Sixty Starlings were released in 1890 in New York City’s Central Park and they have done well for themselves. They now live in all fifty states, most of Canada, and part of Mexico as well as in most other places in the world. Here in North Carolina, they compete (and win) with Eastern Bluebirds, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, and Great Crested Flycatchers.

    Very Neat capture!!!

  • Thank you, AngieBanta! This photo really doesn’t do the small flock the justice they deserved. There was a row of trees and they danced from one end all the way down to the far end. It was delightful!
