North American Raccoon (Procyon lotor) in White Oak (Quercus alba)
As soon as I saw the raccoon climb this tree, I ran to get my camera. I have been watching and taking photos of raccoons for several years. This limb in this tree is a favorite place for a raccoon to take an afternoon snooze. This raccoon knows me, even better than I know it, and so when I came to the bottom of the tree, it only glanced at me. Afterwards it did not hide but stayed on the limb for a nap.
Our woodland home is in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, USA where raccoons are among a great many wildlife species that visit my back yard.

Lovely shot of the little masker. The twisted bough was the perfect place for it to sit for its portrait.
We have a friend who has to keep them from going in the house when she opens the door. There are always wonderful smells of cooking and if all else fails, there’s always cat food. So they get the door shut in their little faces. The bigger the “Macoon” as she called them when she was little, the faster the door closes.

Excellent “RACOON COLLECTION” you have, here!! WoW!

  • Wonderful story! Thank you for sharing it! So far, I have not had one try to get in my door although sometimes in the evening when I go out, there are a couple of raccoons who come to greet me but we don’t touch. We get fairly close but no touching is allowed, mutual agreement.
