Artist's Description

An Orange Sided Monkey Frog (Phyllomedusa hypocondrialis) from near Pailon, Bolivia. These guys are fairly common around my house here but can be challenging to find.

Frogs of the genus Phyllomedusa are often called Waxy Monkey Tree Frogs because of the waxy secretion that they rub all over their bodies using their legs. This wax is a ‘sunscreen’ that helps keep them from drying out. Some species also secret toxins that have a variety of interesting effects on human. They are also unique because they often prefer to walk slowly through the branches rather than jump like many tree frogs. Even when threatened, they will often walk away in a sloth-like motion, even though they are capable of jumping. They are rarely seen in the wild because they spend much of their lives high in the tree tops. The best time to see them in during rainy season when they come down to ponds to breed.
