Before Wong by John Fish

Izzy laughed a lot and many times got out of control when she was eating cake. She would start laughing at something a friend would say and couldn’t stop. It reminded her pot-head husband of the way he got when he was stoned. Izzy’s mother made her see Dr. Wong because she was worried about her laughing so much. Dr. Wong told Izzy she should lose a hundred pounds and cut out all sweets. He put her on a strict diet. Izzy stopped laughing. So her husband made her go back to Dr. Wong because he thought she was depressed. He gave her some pills, which made her hungry. But she still didn’t laugh much. The pills made her so nervous that she started smoking cigarettes. Her mother sent her back to the doctor to quit. More pills. The bottle said they might make her depressed. She stared at an old photo of herself and thought, “Boy, those were the days. Before Wong.”

John Fish is a Los Angeles artist who paints abstracts, landscapes and portraits with expressive painterly strokes and heavily textured surfaces. I explore the way space flows to entwine objects that have no boundaries.

I love this story – she was a natural happy woman, perhaps a bit manic, but so what. Maybe she smoked too, and so what. But that was not okay with her unhappy mother. You have captured her abandon perfectly…. xo
