When he awoke the sun shifted behind a layer of marshmallow clouds and played hide and seek with the cold drizzle. The lake below whistled to waiting elk to drink in the morning air. The tree wanted to paint, but was not inspired by anything original. Blue was enough. Blue again. Blue gobs of latex giving life to the flat paper that opened like a mirror before the tree. A bird flitted past and shouted “Use those branches. Swing those needles.” And the pine tree did that. And it felt good.
