Clip/quote from Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) by George Orwell:
“I hate purity. I hate goodness. I don’t want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone corrupt”
This is the clip as read by John Hurt, playing main character Winston Smith, in the film – the quote from the book is quite different. The gist in both, however, is that the state has taken over what is “good” and “pure”, and twisted the meanings of language to its own evil intentions. Therefore Winston wants to see chaos and “corruption” in opposition to this “purity”.
I can’t find the exact part from the film on Youtube, so here is the wonderful song “FASTER” by the Manic Street Preachers which uses the quote at the start. “FASTER” is from the dark indie-rock album “The Holy Bible”, hence the intelligent yet barely intelligible lyrics and references to politics and history!
