Jewd you asked me a question under one of my pieces and it is difficult to know whether my reply gets seen so I will post it here as well….
Personally I only comment on work that inspires me, and because it is impossible to do this back and forth thing as you mentioned and you are never sure if your thank you gets seen, I like to visit peoples portfolios when they have visited mine to reciprocate the compliment, but I also leave a thank you under my own pictures. Don’t worry too much about ‘what is the done thing’ and just do what you are comfortable with.
This site after all is all about promoting our art so good luck to you and get your stuff out there because it is vibrant and colourful and beautiful.
