Wow! Beautiful tones in this one. Echoes of ‘Wolf Creek’ for me. Always loved the myth of the highway…..
Deborah Parkin
How can something so disturbing, be so inspiring and so beautiful? But it is and it works so well – very thought-provoking,
Teer Wayde
Wow – is that road kill? This is a very haunting image, I adore it!

your art is another manifestation of your poetic mind…...... wonderful seems not enough.. but it is wonderful….....b
aglaia b
oh gosh what a statement here jessica.
real or set up this is so beautiful.
my guess is, it is real?
the red dress has such a significance, ie representing blood.
it kinda reminds me of when we drove to north QLD and passed so much road kill on the way that on the way back home we photographed it all.
so so sad and sickening, yet very common on our country roads.
this has such a strong distinguished feeling to it and such a delicate aesthetic. ;-) xox
Troy Spencer
fantastic work. brave model.
Megan Dacy
Wow, so amazing. Is that roadkill? I hope not!

Compassion! It’s either road kill or she just got there in time to save the fox from it.

amazing – no matter if setup or “real”. always the right amount of mystic light which creates a subconcious threat in your pictures.

Un-friggin’-believable!!! Most would not even think of a composition like this, let alone do it but… not only did you, you did it so well!! The hand on the fox – the bare feet – the red dress… You’re so good Jess!

amazing work well done

Great editorial image.

I am speechless (picking jaw off floor)
I agree with those above. How can something that is so utterly sad and disturbing, be so compelling to look at it. It’s like Little Red Rding Hood is devastated by the death of the wolf, once dead realizing it isn’t as ferocious as she once thought.
Your mind never ceases to amaze me.
Lucan Industri...
Hope she’s had her rabies shots.

Wow Jess! What an amazing image this is!
The hard conservationist in me is glad to see another dead feral animal because it is so destructive to the native environment…..and yet you have engaged my compassion by the tenderness you’ve brought to this with your bare feet and shoulder, soft hand and hidden face.
Such a gift you have!

Amazing work !!

What a powerful statement Jess.
I may be going off on some left-wing tangent here, but its always disheartening to see animals left on the side of the road for so long after they’ve been run over. Sometimes weeks go by before they are removed. I guess it just shows how mankind truly values their existence.
This is an incredible piece of work, and an instant fav..
tarsel
So powerful indeed Jess…..the emotion pours out of this image….wow!!
VelvetGirl
it’s beautiful in an achey sort of way…....xxxx
Katie Hoisington
wow this is just powerful and amazing!!!
Stephen Benn
...not much I can add to the abundance of comments. The tone, red dress, composition all add up the a great pic with emotion. Hiding the ladys face has good effect also. The viewer can place themselves in the pic.
In this pic I see a human that morns for the loss of life.
kimjackman
This is disturbing and mesmerising. The soft, dreamy tones combined with the harsh image/concept make it really striking.
Amanda Cole

Beauitiful image, and a very powerful state ment. mans desire for travel and quiter cars. There was a girl in belfast steped out infront of a bus, she thought it was a padestrian zone and the bus was that silent she never heard it, poor girl was crushed.

Very interesting photo. A couple of comments.
1) If the fox is actually roadkill (and I believe it is) then I only hope it was ‘fresh’ and in cool weather. The model would have really been ‘uncomfortable’ – to say the least! – in that position.
2) The fox appears to be a ‘vixen’ (female) and in whelp (given birth). The nipples are very visible and look to have been nursed recently. The distended belly is more evidence that this is very likely a real ‘roadkill’ and had been dead for over 24 hours. And another piece of evidence for expecting the model was, hopefully, ‘well compensated’ for her efforts!
3) Another feature that points to actual ‘roadkill’ is the condition of the front right leg. It is rotated awkwardly; distal to the median of the foreleg; obviously compound fracture from blunt force trauma. And there is an ‘odd flap of fur’ between both front legs. This would suggest the front right leg is broken and that the right side of the body was badly torn in the hit.
4) The facial ‘grimace’ is the look that sets in with rigor mortis; muscle stiffening following death. The teeth are bared in a way that is completely unnatural to a resting animal. Again, rigor mortis in the upper lip muscles, causing contracting.
If the model was not compensated well for this effort, then she must have been moved by ‘artistic or social’ zealousness. She is however, quite alive. Her 3rd digit (middle finger) on her left hand is ‘lifted’. That muscle reaction only occurs in a ‘living specimen’. Once again -pointing (no pun intended) – to the very likely scenario that this was NOT an easy model gig!!! Wow!! Those Aussie Sheilas really are something ain’t they?
Now, I really suspect this was a ‘self-modeling’ job, too. Why ask – or even pay – someone to do something you could just do yourself. Eh? ”. D
All-in-all, as many have said, this is one very powerful image. Moving on many planes of social interest, it is haunting. Very nice work.
Jessica Tremp replied
ooakgallery, yes it is indeed real roadkill and the model is me.
t0mt0m
Hehe, it’s funny all the people wondering if it was your pet.
This image is so sad. Just as I looked at it I saw an ant on my drawing pad thing for the computer and I was about to kill it with my cup but instead I let it crawl in and now it’s drinking the rest of my tea hehe
It’s just so sad that nobody cares about roadkill, in fact like people here have just referred to it as a ‘roadkill’ instead of a fox. I just saw a haunting thing the other day when a bird ran into this guys tire and it got flung around and came towards me completely stunned with it’s wings outstretched and I could just see something in it’s eyes. Very moving and this just reminded me of that.
Congratulation (for lack of a better word) for laying next to this fox for a very moving and meaningful photograph. This should be a national poster.
Jessica Tremp replied
thank you for such a wonderful comment.

The mark of an artist…..visualizing what can be beautiful in a traumatic event. This is poignant yet uplifting…...in terms of the human compassion that is shared for all life…...you have created a collector piece with this image…...take care and warm regards…..

Miriam Shilling
Your work is amazing, i love the comment someone made in referenece to little red riding hood.
The environmentalist in me doesn’t get that sad when I see a dead fox, but they are beautiful creatures in their natural environment.
On a lighter note, it reminds me of a friend who was visiting from sweden and she saw more dead kangaroos then live ones so she made us stop the car at every road kill so she could lie down next to one and get a photo.
susi lawson

Wow. Amazing!
satsumagirl
Super spooky. It raises lots of questions. Is the woman grieving for the little fox? Is the soul of the fox taking the form of a woman in a red dress? Did they die together? Are we being asked how we can turn our back on a dead animal on the side of the road? Very intriguing to say the least.
Jessica Tremp replied
thank you…i’m glad it brings up so many questions for you.

This is so beautiful and somewhat haunting at the same time.

Marny Barnes
I live 45 minutes outside of the city…and I am constantly being told by other drivers that I should not swerve to miss anilmals on the road. I work in the city and make this drive every day.
I have slammed on my brakes for foxes, a baby bear, and multiple deer.
I can honestly say that I think I would have been the first out of my car, and in tears, much the eway this art depicts(yourself) greiving for the lost life of the fox.
I love this. Truely…..love it!.
Actually held my breath for a moment when I stopped to see this!!!!
Jessica Tremp replied
thanks so much Marny…I’m so happy you get all that from it

oh dear this is so touching. the most emotional thing i have seen in a long time. i love it. well you know what i mean. this is totally me and my daughter. we’ve even been known to say as we were driving along ohhhhhhhhh no only to discover it was a piece of tire. and i have discovered that you cannot help but slam on the brakes. its an automatic reflex. i grew up hearing not to do that also. i think it may be impossible. that photo is so touching. really thats the most amazing real emotion that i have seen in a long time. your thoughtfulness in the piece touches me to the core.

Wow…there is so much feeling in this. I hae lived on a many a road were the kill makes you hold your breath when you see it. I have been fortunate enough to have never had a close call myself, but once when I was small I remember my mother bursting in the house sobbing….she had hit not one but two stray kittens and was begging my brother to go back with her to get them. We burried them in our backyard that night. This photo makes me think of that. Nice stirring work.
