“Larry” is an Elephant Hawk Moth larva (caterpillar). He’s about 3 inches long and is an eating machine. He’s munching his way through Rose Bay Willow Herb at a tremendous rate. Soon I’ll have to put some dry leaves & compost in his pot and find a suitable place for him to hibernate in his pupal form over winter and then, hopefully, a wonderful pink & olive green adult will emerge

I didn’t find him, Richard, a friend brought him over, just hope I can rear him, I’ve never had one of the Hawk Moth larvae before, I’m really quite thrilled, he’s a friendly little chap, too.

I had 3 of these in my garden a couple of years ago, they totally decimated the fuschias. They are a proper caterpillar. Neil
A friend brought him, Neil. I don’t have fuschias anymore, don’t know what bedstraw looks like so it had to be Rose Bay Willow Herb, and there’s still a lot of that about – although much less now I’ve started feeding this intestine on legs LOL

What a beauty Jesika – haven’t ever seen one of these in my garden – good luck with his hibernation and look forward some images of him in his colourful finery when he emerges !! xx
I’ll tend him carefully, I’ve decided where he’ll over winter and he’ll be checked several times a day – remember I was once a midwife! I’m hopeful, I’ve raised moths before but never a Hawk Moth, exciting times ahead, eh?

Yikes!!! He does look hungry! Give him lots of leaves and he might turn into something pretty! :)) Fascinating Jesika!
Caterbugs are simply eating machines, yes he’s hungry, but he’s got lots of fresh food daily and his box emptied & cleaned to keep him safe. He’ll emerge as “Does this mean we’re engaged?” and “At last”, if I could do links………
