Artist's Description

At the end of the season, I send a CD of butterbug images to Howard, editor of Argus the Yorkshire Butterfly Conservation magazine. Last year I also sent a mass of paper work and images pertaining to a proposal for a grant from English Nature to restore York’s Strays to hay meadows. (with permission from the council, of course)
Christmas Eve 2010, I got the wonderful news from Bob at the Council, that the grant, £500,000 over 10 years had been awarded. Grazing is now number and time limited, sheep & not cows (bad for dogs, better for the grass land, but don’t tell Bob I said that! LOL), hay cutting & removal has begun, ponds will be dug and species rich hay from a church yard has already been spread. Plug plants (wild flowers) and trees will follow.
Howard has managed to distill all the information I sent him into an interesting and highly informative article in January’s edition of Argus along with 11 photos, including the Comma, seen above shot on the Buddleia in my York (England, garden.)
an extract;
“Walmgate Stray (AKA Low Moor) is hidden by housing, the University, a care home, a barracks and a police HQ…an amazing 80 acre open space thought to have been in pasture since at least the 13th century.
There is also evidence of medieval ridge & furrow remains, items from both World Wars and Roman remains”

This is where Girlies take me several times a week for my daily constitutional. In season I count butterflies & moths and have recently added Ladybirds and Hoverflies to my counts. Bob has enlisted me to record bees too!
