Nice hat!
Mrs Grebe saw & heard me approach but for once I had the camera ready and so was fast enough to get this view of her crest fully raised as she turned her head towards me. Edwardian ladies thought this wonderful crest should decorate their hats, rather than the birds’ heads. The grebes were hunted almost to extinction to satisfy this vanity.

This sky where we live
Is no place to lose your wings.
So love, love, love.

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you have no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain.

this is too great—and great info to go with it – unfortunately that mentality has not vanished and birds are still treated as disposable itmes – I don’t think our grebes here will ever be this cool – dave

“Yes, mon beautiful new chapeau, the latest from the Swamps Elysees”...:)...seriously though, a very sad story
so much damage to the animal kingdom done in the name of human vanity! I’ve never seen such a bird beforelets leave the feathers on the bird. Hope they make a full recovery! maritajesika
Thank you for this, Marita. You’ll be delighted to learn that Great Crested Grebes made a full recovery. WW1 put an end to frivolous fashions! Sadly not ALL stories have such a happy ending…
