Mummy Grebe
Great Crested Grebe nesting at the University of York.
Girlies had taken me Grebe hunting today and I was delighted to find a second nest, this one quite close to the edge of the lake and reasonably accessible through a bramble patch. Happily, this nest is well within the reach of my camera & tele-extender lens.
Mrs Grebe was somewhat disturbed by 2 Canada geese battling near her nest, but made no attempt to leave her eggs.

Jesika…As usual…a great shot. i love the way the wind seems to be blowing her feathers. At least I am assuming the wind is making the feathers stick up. I love the look …Liz

Liz, thank you for looking in. The raised feathers are the crest from which this grebe gets its name. The birds were hunted almost to extinction to satisfy Edwardian ladies who thought the crests looked better on their hats than on the birds’ heads. Fortunately fashions change and the birds are now safe.
