For the Love of the Tale

At the heart of the tale
there’s a misfit, a misfortune,
a lesson unlearned, and
an atomic mindscape on fire.
Love Lost escaped through
the back door and Sexual
Desire’s the one who started
that fire. Where there
should be running and shouting,
there’s a supernatural calm—
a stupor like that of peace
that surpasses understanding.
Dramatic irony? or the slowing
down of things for the sake
of a striptease slow reveal?
There are rabbit trails, good luck
charms and curses just the same.
There is useless blame, remorse
and shame, and someone destitute
(thrown in for good measure).
There’s a treasure hunt, a mystery
to solve, and a relationship
about to dissolve—there’s always
a bit of that weaved into each
fiber. There are countless
questions gone unanswered,
minutes as hours—or often
longer—that warp time and space,
and the ordinary as sublime.
There are roads less traveled
taken here and that has
made all the difference.¹
And there are pages and pages
that flip themselves
just as a flock of birds
in flight flip
the sky from dusk to night—
nothing more than a whisper
on the horizon, or a tug of
the shutter blinds that folds
the light in on itself and asks
the viewer to peer out
and regard it in renewed ways.
Undiscovered worlds and places,
words and concepts,
and interesting faces
await your arrival, their hands—
slipped through the binding—
extend in open welcome.
“Pick me.” “No, me.”
They wave and squirm from
overstuffed shelves, from
newly stocked cyber spaces.
And all there is left to do
is climb into one and pull it
snug up around you like
the quilted fibers made
by loving hands
that it is.

I have missed writing and reading for my own pleasure and this is why.

The funny thing is I was JUST thinking the same thing as my classes were winding down to an end. I love writing, but when I was in creative writing class sometimes it just felt so…forced. Especially with a deadline and a grade attached. That just felt wrong to me. I can’t wait for the summer so I can have more time to read and write what I want and when I want :) That’s when my best work is created.

And I agree with Stella – I love this concept! The last few lines wraps this up so beautifully. I love every reference to fibers. Great work! :D

  • Here’s to summer creative flows. :) Looking forward to seeing what it produces for both of us. Thanks, xox

For that stance…meaning may be that love runs in stories
and that create a tale…and that tale is a fleshy remembering.
So I have travelled along yours and that road has been made clear,
and misterious at the same time.
Your writing is great…with an intention but no purposes.
