Self Portrait: Into the Light by Jenifer DeBellis

Currently unavailable for purchase

She takes it all in,
these fragments of a world
she must face head on.
She watches, and sees
through a scope
now unfogging and becoming
clear. Can she see past
the fear to step all the way
into the light? She might
be ready, but can’t I just
keep her safe a little longer?

So much expression … her eyes tell their own story of search and growth!! xo

  • I know, and hauntingly so. Nostalgia had me focused on the eyes last night while searching through my pictures. This one spoke to me even in my dreams. xox

It is so lovely to see you here Jenifer.
Taking that step into the light makes me think of a young bird preparing for its first flight – so scared as it sits on that branch – but then comes freedom. You will find it, I have no doubt.
    I love this poem.

  • Ha! This is my eldest daughter, Anna. I’m not as young as you think I am. ;) What a resemblance, though, isn’t there? She can be so serious with her thoughts at times, while at others she is full of the richest humour. This one reminds me that I can’t protect her and keep her on this side of the window forever. And thanks, the poem was an afterthought that flowed out whilst I meditated on the depth of her expression. xox

OMG – I am stunned. I really thought it was you – you are like two peas in a pod.!!

  • I know! And it wasn’t always like this, either. Every year we grow to look more like each other and it seems to defy logic as we didn’t start out that way. :)

aw… that undying wish of a mother to protect her children from all pain, impossible as that is
this is such a beautiful piece!
especially for the two perspectives it has…
ahhh, this is just beautiful… the connections between generations, the women we come from and the women we are yet to become x

  • It’s a never-ending cycle of evolution, isn’t it? Great additions, dab. xox
