While I was contemplating what I would do for Steve McLaren’s… Bodymechanic upcoming exhibition – Curiously Consumed… I came across the legend of Kaldi and his Dancing Goats. The legend varies with the telling… but it made me smile. I also found that at this time… whenever I think of the word curiously it made me feel childlike and carefree…. this led me to think the two were a match and why I approached the work as I have.
For those interested the story goes something like this….. remember there are a lot of different versions… this is just an abbreviation of what seems to be the most popular.
Long ago (maybe 1000 years) there lived a humble goatherder named Kaldi (he may have been Ethiopian or he may have been Arab… Ethiopian seems the most popular).
One day Kaldi was tending his goats and decided to take a nap. On waking he noticed a few of his goats behaving in a strange way… dancing and frolicking about the fields.
The next day, the same thing happened… he also noticed that these goats were wandering away from the main herd… so he followed them and found they were eating a strange bush with berries on it.
Curiously, he consumed some of the berries and soon felt so invigorated that he began to dance about the fields too!
A little while later a monk happened along and asked Kaldi what was the source of his great joy. Kaldi let the monk in on his find and the monk took some of the berries away him.
Back at the monastery, the monk experimented with the berries and concocted a brew which he gave to his fellow monks. This brew helped the Monks to stay awake at night during their prayers. They also passed on the secret concoction to visiting monks and soon coffee had spread over the world…..
The end… : ))
There’s probably not a lot of truth in the tale… but it’s a nice story……….. Oh… and the text on the painting says…… Legend has it that… Coffee was discovered by Kaldi the Goat-Herder… Who Curiously Consumed some berries and began to dance with his Goats…… : )
So there you go…. my entry in the Curiously Consumed Exhibition at the Tap Gallery Sydney…. : ))
Original is for sale….. POA just bm me!
