Can anybody help....? by JennyMac

Posted on March 31, 2010

Hi all…. this is a bit of a long shot……

My father is having trouble getting the exposure meter on his Canon F1 fixed. His regular guy says he can’t get the parts he needs from Canon. So I thought I’d ask if anyone knows anyone who deals in film cameras and maybe able to help. I know it’s a long shot but I thought I’d try……. : ))

Cheers,
Jenny : ))

My guess is that the major camera makers are so into digital that having spares left for film cameras is very remote. We have a shop here in England called Clives Cameras and is in Scarborough on our east coast where I live. The real problem is gonna be getting a replacement body to you. why not have him go digital as he can still use any lenses he might have.

  • JennyMac:

Thanks Trevor….. I’ll let him know about Clives….. unfortunately it would be bigger than Ben Hur for him to switch to digital. He uses his slides for lecturing and has over 40years worth. He’s 72 and not computer literate so to switch over would be a huge task…. one he doesn’t want to make…. : ))

Jenny I used to work in a camera shop and unfortunately the problem your dad is having is not uncommon. Parts for older camera are just very hard to find after a certain amount of time. The F1 is a great camera and if your dad wants to keep using it I think he should be able to find one used. I would recommend trying KEH They are a fantastic used equipment dealer here in the US. I bought my D70 from them and I’m betting they could find another F1 for your Dad.

  • JennyMac:

Thanks Jim…. he loves his camera… had it forever and doesn’t want to change to digital. It would really be pretty hard for him to do that as he uses his slides to lecture and has over 40 years worth! Could you imagine at 72 someone who’s not computer literate suddenly changing his whole system of work….!!! I’ll pass on your recommendation to him…. I think he’ll be trying all avenues to keep his camera going…… : ))

pawn shops and cash converters are a good place to find an F1 for sale. he could get one for parts or try gumtree.com.au.

  • JennyMac:

    Good idea Paul… I’ll pass that on to him…. thanks heaps…. :))

My neighbour stumbled on a repair bloke in Sydney who has repair jobs abandoned & left at his shop. Will speak to him to find out more info as to where this bloke is exactly.Unsure if he has film cams…will let you know in a day or two,if I can catch my neighbour around

  • JennyMac:

Hey Jeff… that would be great if you could find out! At this stage Dad’s prepared to even look overseas… but if he could find something local that would obviously be better…. look forward to hearing what you find out… cheers…. : ))
